Pune infrastructure: metro, ring road and airport

Homes gain value when the infrastructure around them improves. Here are the big-ticket projects shaping Pune, with a note on where each stands so you can separate what is running from what is still promised.

Metro network

Pune Metro's Purple and Aqua lines are already operating in parts of the city. For west Pune, the important line is Line 3 (Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar), a fully elevated corridor of about 23 km with 23 stations, built on a public-private partnership model with Tata Group and Siemens. It received safety approval for its first phase in July 2026 and was awaiting an inauguration date as of mid-September 2026. See our Line 3 guide.

An east-west extension linking Vanaz to Chandani Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi has also been approved by the Centre.

Four infrastructure projects: Metro Line 3, Ring Road, Expressway Missing Link and Purandar airport
Key infrastructure projects around Pune.

Ring Road

The Pune Ring Road is planned at about 173 km in total, with the west section targeted earlier than the east section. It is meant to divert through traffic away from the inner city; projections of a large cut in inner-city traffic are estimates and should be treated as expectations, not guarantees.

Mumbai-Pune Expressway Missing Link

A 13.3 km stretch with twin tunnels and a cable-stayed bridge is intended to shorten the Mumbai-Pune trip by 25 to 30 minutes. Because Wakad Chowk sits on the expressway and NH-48, west Pune benefits directly from any improvement in that corridor.

Purandar airport

The new Pune airport at Purandar is planned on about 2,832 hectares with two 4,000-metre runways and a cargo terminal. Land acquisition began in March 2025 after a long history of delays, and no firm opening date had been confirmed at the time of writing. It is a long-term story, so do not base a purchase decision on an opening date.

How to read infrastructure announcements

Announcements often mix approvals, funding, construction and opening. A project that is approved is not the same as one under construction, and neither is the same as one that is open to the public. Separating these stages helps you judge how much weight to give a promise.

As a buyer, favour projects where the benefit already exists or is close to completion, and treat later-stage projects as upside rather than the reason to buy.

Before you decide

Follow official announcements from the metro, road and airport authorities rather than relying on marketing brochures. Timelines for public projects often shift, so buy a home that works for you today and treat future infrastructure as a bonus.
